MAP-MODEL-MAP explores how digital map applications have become an essential tool in contemporary architecture.
Applications such as Google Maps, Google Earth and Microsoft Bing maps have fundamentally changed our notion of observation in buildings and cities. Projections like aerial, 45 degree, and bird’s eye view are special features offering easy-to-read satellite photo collage and/or montage in digital form. Although none of these maps truly reflect their named views—in terms of consistency with perspective rules, they are more abstract than real—this anti-perspective (or so-called conceptual perspective) delivers both a reliable representation and qualities of cities that are difficult to capture in conventional site models through continuous orthogonal-like projection, high definition, vivid colors, textures, and long depth of field.
In a series of collage and/or montage images from multiple websites, M.M.M. reveals the complex tectonic data of the large scale fabric and structures of the built environment as a new kind of virtual object for architects to work with.
