나는 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 목조형 가구 디자인을, 미국 뉴욕의 코넬대학교 건축학과에서 건축학 석사를 전공했다. 2012년 초타원형 출판을 설립하고 한국에 돌아온 뒤, 서울 시립대 건축학과에서 1학년과 5학년을 가르쳤다.
초타원형이라는 프로젝트 명은 온전히 나 개인의 것이 아니다. 건축가와 과학자/시인이 함께 만든 초타원형 기하개념과 마찬가지로, 나는 개인 작업 외에도 게임 개발자, 디자이너, 사진가, 애니메이터, 예술가, 음악가 등 다양한 직군의 사람들과 협업했다. 따로 또 같이, 일관된 프로세스 안에서 전혀 다른 결과가 도출되는 작업을 계속하고 있다.
본 홈페이지는 나의 개인적인 작업과 협업 모두를 아우르는 총체적 아카이브이자, 그 자체로 또 하나의 데이타 시각화 프로젝트다. 그래픽 디자인 스튜디오 RW와 함께 2023년 7월 16일 부터 협업하여 만든 본 홈페이지는 기본적으로는 텍스트와 이미지가 계속 위로 쌓이는 구조를 가지고 있다. 가급적 다양하고 많은 카테고리를 통해 텍스트와 이미지를 구분지을 수 있게 했다. 태그가 있고, 누르면 이미지와 텍스트가 나온다. 미니멀하고, 복잡한 UI가 없는 외형과 구조를 따른다. 그러나 평범한 포트폴리오 사이트와는 달리, 정렬된 태그들이 정확히 어떤 이미지 또는 텍스트와 대응하는지는 잘 드러나지 않는다.
너무나도 단순하지만 잘 보이지(읽히지) 않는 것. 십수년 동안 내가 해온 건축, 출판, 전시, 인테리어 등의 다양한 작업들에서 일관된 부분이 있다면 바로 그것일 것이다. 결과적으로 시간별, 종류별, 프로젝트별, 협업자들 별로 재정렬할 수 있는 이 홈페이지는 보는 사람과 업로드하는 이 그 누구도 예측할 수 없는 패턴을 생성하며 해석을 유도한다.

I majored in woodworking & furniture design at Hong-ik University and pursued a master’s degree in Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University in New York, USA. In 2012, I founded Superellipse Books and returned to S. Korea. Following that, I taught first-year and fifth-year students in the Department of Architecture at the University of Seoul.
The project name “SUPERELLIPSE” is not solely mine, just like the geometric concept of the super-ellipse, which was created by an architect, and a scientist/poet together. In addition to my work, I have collaborated with people from various professions such as game developers, designers, animators, photographers, artists, and musicians. Working within a consistent process, both separately and together, has led to entirely different outcomes.
This website serves as a comprehensive archive that encompasses both my work and collaborations, and it is also another data visualization project in itself. Created in collaboration with the graphic design studio RW on July 16, 2023, the website essentially has a structure where text and images continue to stack upwards. Efforts have been made to differentiate text and images through various and numerous categories. There are tags that, when clicked, display corresponding images and text. The design follows a minimal, and uncomplicated UI structure and layout. However, unlike a typical portfolio website, the organized tags do not readily reveal how they correspond to specific images or text.
It may appear overly simplistic but not easily discernible. If there is a consistent aspect in the various works I have been involved in, such as architecture, publishing, exhibitions, interior design, and more over the past decade or so, it would be this. As a result, this website allows for reordering by time, type, project, and collaborators, creating unpredictable patterns that prompt interpretation for anyone who interacts with it.
